What Does Greatness Look Like?

When we think of "greatness," what comes to mind? Big numbers, impressive titles, and public recognition often top the list. But what if greatness looks completely different in God's kingdom?

In a recent sermon from Luke 22, Pastor Michael challenged our idea of greatness, drawing from a powerful exchange between Jesus and his disciples. After Jesus shares a vulnerable moment about his coming betrayal, the disciples start bickering about who among them is the "greatest."

It's a familiar story of human nature—we turn a moment about Jesus into an opportunity to promote ourselves. But Jesus, in his gentle wisdom, doesn't scold them. Instead, he uses it as a teaching moment. He says that while the world's kings lord their authority over others, it shouldn't be that way for his followers.

Jesus turns the world's values on their head. He says that the greatest among us should be like the youngest, and the leader like a servant. He models this himself, reminding them that he is "among you as one who serves."

Pastor Michael explained that Jesus, the King of all, emptied himself to become a servant, even to the point of a brutal death on a cross (Philippians 2:5-8). This is the ultimate example of true greatness.

He then gives us an incredible promise: "I bestow on you a kingdom, just as my Father bestowed one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom." Jesus is giving us the incredible calling of being a servant king—not just in the future, but right now. Our royal responsibility is to follow his example of humble service.

So, where does this kind of greatness show up in our lives? It's often in the unseen places—a mom lovingly caring for her kids, a friend who listens without judgment, or someone who serves their community without seeking recognition. It's not about big stages or titles; it's about following Jesus's example of loving people and laying down our lives.

Greatness in the kingdom of God isn't about what we gain, but what we give away. It's about serving with humility, kindness, and love, just as Jesus did for us.
