More Than a Label: What Makes a Real Church?

Have you ever wondered what actually makes a church legitimate? Is it a cool logo? A fancy building? Having your kids' space completely figured out?

In a recent message walking through Acts 11, Pastor Michael tackled this exact question by looking at the incredible, history-shaping movement that happened in the city of Antioch.

The Spark That Started It All

Up until Acts 11, the early Jesus movement was mostly contained within Jewish culture. But then, something wild happened. Driven by the Holy Spirit—and scattered by persecution—ordinary, nameless believers went to Antioch and started sharing the good news of Jesus not just with insiders, but with absolute outsiders (the Greeks).

They didn't have complicated strategies, massive marketing campaigns, or a blueprint; they just moved in everyday obedience and boldness. The result? A massive, thriving melting-pot church where people came to faith by the thousands. In fact, Antioch was so radically marked by Jesus that it’s the very place believers were first called "Christians"—a nickname basically meaning little Christs who wanted to help save people.

So, What Makes Us "Legitimate"?

Pastor Michael pointed out three core markers of a real, authentic church community that apply to us today:

  1. Having the Holy Spirit: It’s not about looking a certain way, fitting into a specific culture, or checking religious boxes. The true mark of God’s people is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

  2. Sharing the Gospel: The believers in Antioch didn't keep the good news to themselves. They shared it with both insiders (people who were already close to God) and total outsiders. Evangelism isn't just for the "professionals"—it’s the calling of every single "them".

  3. Enduring Through Trial: True faith stands the test of time. Whether it's facing a global famine or navigating local hardships, remaining faithful through the fire proves the realness of our faith.

Moving Forward Together

It’s easy to look at our own shortcomings, our fears about sharing our faith, or the unique challenges of our local community and feel a little overwhelmed. But God doesn't look for flashiness or perfection. He looks for willing hearts.

Let's pray together, lean into the movement of the Holy Spirit, and boldly share the love of Jesus right where we are!
