Being a Fruitful Christian: May 24, 2026
Happy Sunday! This week, Pastor Michael read from 2nd Peter chapter 1 verses 2 through 11 and taught about fruitfulness and ensuring that Christ is our foundation. He shared what Peter taught the early church about what it takes to be fruitful and who we truly are through the salvation Jesus brought. He built on last week’s sermon of who we are in Christ.
Pastor Michael shared four points to help us see our fruitfulness:
You have everything you need if you know the Gospel (v. 2-3)
Is your life fruitful? Being fruitful has two parts to it: producing the Fruit of the Spirit and spreading the Gospel to others. If you are not producing fruit right now, don’t worry, you have the tools to begin. If you know the Gospel, you have everything you need for life and Godliness.
Faith is the way - Build on it (v. 4-7)
If our faith is our foundation, how can we build on it? Supplement your faith with goodness. If you believe that Jesus has died for your sin, the natural response is to let your sin go and begin to try to look like him. Supplement goodness with knowledge. Learn the Word, learn more about God. Supplement knowledge with self-control. Find ways to take actions to strengthen your faith. This should all be built on faith, though. Works are not how we are saved, faith is how we are saved.
If you keep growing, fruitfulness is a guarantee (v. 8)
All these practices bring you closer to who you are in Christ, someone who is saved and perfect in the eyes of God. Fruitfulness is your first nature. Once your actions reflect your faith, it is a natural consequence for you to begin producing fruit.
Double check if you really Believe the Gospel (v. 9-11)
If you are not experiencing fruitfulness, go back and reaffirm your faith. Ensure that you truly believe that you have been saved through faith. Search your heart and truly ask if you are rooted in the truth that Jesus is your Savior. Do you believe in what Jesus has done for you?
“For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.” 2 Peter 1:11 CSB
This week, take time to evaluate your heart. What is your hope in? Is what Christ has done for you your hope? Or is your hope that you can be good enough? Let Christ be your foundation, for he is firm, and he is a vine that produces bountiful branches that bear much fruit.
