Shaking in Our Boots: Finding True Boldness When It Matters Most

Have you ever had a moment where you felt God nudging you to step out of your comfort zone, and your immediate reaction was, "No way, Jose"?

In his recent sermon on Acts 4, Isaac shared a great story about the first time he ever had to share his faith publicly. As an introvert who was quietly sitting in a high school Bible class, the absolute last thing he wanted to do was stand up in front of his peers at chapel. He was quite literally shaking in his boots. But right before he stepped up, a total sense of peace washed over him.

That moment taught him a massive truth that anchors the entire book of Acts: God empowers Christians with boldness through the Holy Spirit to witness courageously, even in the face of opposition.

When Hope Meets Hostility

Isaac took us into the story of Peter and John. Just after doing a beautiful thing—healing a lame man—they found themselves arrested by the religious leaders. The "top dogs" of the temple were incredibly annoyed that they were preaching the resurrection of Jesus.

But here is the beautiful twist: even though the messengers were thrown in jail, the message couldn’t be stopped. In fact, the church grew from 3,000 to about 5,000 believers that very day!

Five Ways the Holy Spirit Makes Us Bold

Isaac broke down exactly how the Holy Spirit equips us when the pressure is on:

  • Bold with the Resurrection: The Spirit gives us the confidence to stand on the historical truth that Jesus is alive.

  • Bold through His Power, Not Ours: Isaac made a great distinction here. When we follow Jesus, we are full of the Spirit (enjoying love, joy, and peace). But when we face opposition, the Spirit fills us with the exact words we need in that moment.

  • Bold with the Name of Jesus: We lean on Jesus as our cornerstone—the only narrow path that leads to true life.

  • Bold with a Transformed Life: Peter and John weren't fancy, formally trained scholars. They were regular guys, but people knew they had been with Jesus because their lives were completely changed.

  • Bold in the Face of Opposition: When told to stop talking about Jesus, they simply said, "We are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

What Do We Do Next?

When Peter and John were finally released, they didn't pray for safety or for their problems to vanish. Instead, they prayed for more boldness. And God answered them so powerfully that the very building they were standing in started shaking!

The Takeaway: If you have surrendered your life to Jesus, you already have the Holy Spirit living inside you. Whether you're dealing with a skeptical coworker, a friend at school, or even a family member who doesn't believe, God has given you the gift of boldness.

Don’t be afraid to use it!
