Standing Boldly: Unshakable Faith in the Face of Opposition
What does it look like to truly shine with God’s grace—even when the heat is turned up? In Pastor Michael’s message covering Acts 6:8 through Acts 8:3, we dove into the powerful, challenging story of Stephen, the very first Christian martyr.
Stephen was a man filled with faith, grace, power, and the Holy Spirit. As he performed miracles and shared the truth of Jesus, opposition quickly arose. Opponents couldn't stand up against the Spirit-led wisdom he spoke, so they resorted to false accusations and dragged him before the Sanhedrin—the supreme ruling council.
Instead of backing down, Stephen stood boldly before these powerful leaders. He recounted biblical history, showing how God's people had repeatedly rejected His messengers—from Moses all the way to Jesus. His words pierced the hearts of the crowd, but instead of repenting, they reacted in a furious rage. Yet in his final moments, as he looked up into heaven and saw Jesus standing at God's right hand, Stephen reflected the love and character of Christ, praying for those who were taking his life.
From Stephen’s inspiring and sobering story, we can draw three crucial lessons for our own journey of faith:
Identity in the Spirit Makes You Like Jesus: Stephen wasn't famous or high-ranking before this; he was simply a faithful servant filled with the Holy Spirit. When our identity is rooted in the Spirit, we begin to act, speak, love, and forgive just like Jesus did—even toward those who oppose us.
Boldness May Bring Rejection, but it Guarantees God’s Approval: Living authentically for Christ and speaking His truth won't always make us popular. Rejection hurts, but being filled with the Spirit shifts our focus from seeking human approval to resting in the delight and acceptance of God.
God’s Plans Are Bigger Than Our Present Circumstances: Stephen’s death sparked a wave of severe persecution in Jerusalem that scattered the early believers. While that seemed tragic, it ultimately fulfilled Jesus' command to carry the Gospel into Judea, Samaria, and beyond. God used even this heartbreaking moment to spread His love to the whole world.
