The Gift of Letting Go: Lessons on Kingdom Forgiveness

In a recent sermon, Pastor Michael dove deep into a topic that often feels counter-cultural but is central to our faith: forgiveness. While our modern "cancel culture" often demands that people "feel the heat" for their mistakes, the Kingdom of God operates on a completely different frequency.

Forgiveness is Not an Option

Pastor Michael made one thing very clear: in the Kingdom of God, forgiving others isn’t just a nice suggestion—it’s a necessity. He pointed to the book of Matthew, where Peter asks if forgiving someone seven times is enough. Jesus’ answer? Keep on forgiving, over and over again.

Giving Up What is Owed

What does true forgiveness actually look like? It’s more than just saying "it’s okay" or making excuses for someone's behavior. According to the sermon:

  • It’s an intentional decision to give up your right to revenge or the debt you are "owed".

  • It’s about restoration, choosing to bring someone back into a right relationship rather than creating distance.

  • It recognizes the wrong but chooses to let go of the resentment that acts like a poison in our own hearts.

The Big Picture: A Trillion-Dollar Debt

To illustrate the weight of this, Pastor Michael shared the parable of the servant who was forgiven an "unrealistic, stupid amount of money"—nearly a trillion dollars—by a king. Yet, that same servant went out and choked a fellow worker over a much smaller debt.

The takeaway is humbling: we have all been forgiven an unpayable debt by God. When we hold onto resentment over the "small" things others do to us, it’s a "slap in the face" to the grace God has already poured out on us.

"If you want to share the gospel in every sense of the word, it means bring the kingdom of God into their lives by showing them a picture of the gospel through your actions."

A Challenge for This Week

Whether it’s a strained relationship with a parent or a minor grudge against a friend, Pastor Michael encourages us to find that "beautiful restoration" that comes from the gospel. By forgiving truly and fully, we don't just feel better—we show the world the very glory and character of God.

Let’s choose to drop the heavy load of resentment and walk in the freedom of forgiveness today.
