From Palms to Practice: Becoming a "Word of Truth Baby"

Happy Sunday, everyone! In today’s sermon, Pastor Michael took us on a journey from the high-energy gates of Jerusalem to the practical wisdom of the Book of James. It was a powerful reminder that while it’s easy to wave a palm branch in a crowd, it’s much harder—and more important—to let God’s Word actually change us from the inside out.

The Trap of Self-Deception

We started with a tough question: how could the people in Jerusalem, who treated Jesus like a king one moment, miss who He truly was shortly after?. The answer? Self-deception. Pastor Michael explained that we often become slaves to our own desires, which act like a "cycle of destruction" that blinds us to the truth.

He shared a funny but convicting analogy about a "Jolly Rancher addiction"—how a small, seemingly harmless desire can grow into something that eventually leads to "death" or spiritual failure. This is how sin works; it starts small and grows until it creates spiritual blindness.

What is a "Word of Truth Baby"?

To counter this, Pastor Michael challenged us with a phrase you won’t soon forget: we need to be "Word of Truth Babies".

Based on James 1:18, this means recognizing that God, our "Father of Light," chose to give us birth through His Word of truth. Being a "Word of Truth Baby" means:

  • Being Quick to Listen: Truly hearing what God is saying.

  • Humbly Receiving the Word: Not assuming we know better or that the sermon is "just for the other guy".

  • Practicing "Active Doing": Moving beyond just sitting in a pew to actually obeying.

Real Wisdom Comes from Obedience

One of the most provocative points of the sermon was from Psalm 119:100: "I understand more than my elders because I obey your precepts". True spiritual vision and wisdom don't come from just "knowing" more; they come from obeying what we already know.

Whether it’s the call to evangelize or the command to care for orphans and widows, when we suppress God’s voice, we stay blind. But when we obey, the Word becomes alive and powerful in our lives.
