Hearing, Knowing, and Moving: Lessons from Acts 8
Have you ever felt a sudden nudge to talk to someone or take an unexpected detour in your day, only to wonder, “Is this God, or is this just my own imagination?”
In a recent sermon on Acts 8:26–40, Pastor Michael dove into the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, unpacking what it truly looks like to be led by the Holy Spirit. It’s a powerful reminder that God is actively working behind the scenes, using ready hearts to transform lives.
1. Listening to the Spirit Requires Action
When an angel of the Lord told Philip to go south to a specific desert road, he didn't receive a complete, step-by-step master plan. He simply got up and went.
Hearing from God often starts in quiet moments of prayer and scriptural reflection. But discernment also happens through testing those prompts and stepping out in faith—even when running up to a high-ranking official’s chariot seems intimidating or unusual! God rarely reveals the entire destination upfront; He simply asks us to take the next obedient step.
2. Know the Word to Point Others to Jesus
When Philip approached the chariot, he found the Ethiopian official reading from the prophet Isaiah, struggling to understand who the passage was about. Because Philip knew the Scriptures, he was able to jump right into the conversation and share the good news of Jesus.
We don't always read the Bible just for our own daily inspiration. Sometimes, God is building up truth in our hearts so we can be ready to help someone else who is searching. As Paul encouraged Timothy, we are called to be ready "in season and out of season" to share the hope we have.
3. A Faith That Goes "All-In"
The Ethiopian man's response to the Gospel was immediate. Seeing a body of water nearby, he asked, "What would keep me from being baptized?"
Baptism is an identity shift—dying to our old self and stepping into new life with Christ. Despite his background, physical condition, or status as a foreigner, the Gospel offered him total belonging in God's family. When truth lands on a hungry heart, the natural response is to go all-in.
Being Ready for the "Right Moment"
From Philip’s sudden teleportation afterward to the church expanding into Africa, this story shows how a single moment of simple obedience can spark an incredible ripple effect.
As you go about your week, consider taking a moment in silence to ask God where He might be sending you. Who in your everyday routine is waiting for someone to help them understand the hope of Jesus?
