From Persecutor to Chosen Instrument: Where Is Your Identity Found?
Have you ever looked at a moment in your past and realized it changed everything?
In a powerful sermon at Gospel Community Church, Pastor Michael walked us through Acts 9:1–19—the iconic story of Saul’s encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. It’s a passage full of drama, dramatic turnarounds, and deep lessons about where we find our true identity.
Here are a few encouraging takeaways from the message to carry into your week!
1. Zeal for God vs. Zeal for Tradition
Before his encounter on the road, Saul wasn’t just a skeptic—he was actively hunting down Christians, fueled by a desire to protect his religious traditions. Pastor Michael challenged us to ask an honest question: Are we truly zealous for God, or are we just zealous for the traditions and habits we’ve mastered?
It’s easy to slip into managing rules rather than nurturing a loving, living relationship with Jesus. Saul had to be brought to his knees—and blinded by the glorious light of Christ —to realize that all his religious achievements meant nothing without a heart surrendered to God.
2. A Call to Step Out in Faith (The Ananias Example)
One of the unsung heroes of this story is Ananias. When God asked him to go find Saul, Ananias was understandably hesitant. Saul had a terrifying reputation as an enemy of the church!
Yet, when God reassured him, Ananias obeyed. He walked into that house, placed his hands on Saul, and said two incredible words: "Brother Saul".
Ananias didn't view Saul by his past reputation; he welcomed him through God’s grace. It’s a beautiful reminder for us to open our hearts to the people God is transforming, even when it feels unexpected or intimidating.
3. Your New Identity in Christ
When Saul was baptized, everything shifted. He was no longer defined by his degrees, his past mistakes, or his old reputation as a persecutor. He became a chosen instrument to bring the Gospel to the world.
Pastor Michael reminded us that our baptism and our commitment to Jesus serve as a milestone:
We don't get our hope or worth from status, wealth, or human approval.
Our past failures and screw-ups don't define us anymore.
Our true identity rests solely in Jesus' death and resurrection.
Live Your Story as a Witness
Saul’s radical transformation wasn't something he kept to himself. Throughout the rest of his life, he frequently shared his story as evidence of God's power and grace.
You have a story, too! Every time you share how God met you, forgave you, and gave you new life, you are acting as a witness to His goodness.
